MRI - Important information about your MRI scan

MRI is the most sophisticated method of diagnostic medical imaging, capable of producing high quality multi-plane images of the different regions of the human body.

MRI scans can be performed on different parts of the human body. It is one of the most important diagnostic method used in many neurological, musculoskeletal and abdominal-pelvic diseases, thus supporting the selection of the most optimal treatment (therapy). Furthermore, it helps to identify abnormalities or unusual conditions in the soft tissues, with a particular focus on nerves, muscles, ligaments and organs.

MRI images are produced by a high field (1.5T) superconducting magnet using electromagnetic waves. During the image acquisition, it is very important that you lie still inside the MRI scanner.The MRI scanning method has been used since the early 1980s and has no known long-term adverse side effects.

Before the examination

Following your arrival to the MRI center, You will have to fill out and sign an MR Safety Questionnaire and consent form. This will provide the staff with important information and details about your health status. Please remember to bring with You your referral, reports of previous medical imaging examinations and all other important medical documents!

Important information about Your arrival

Please arrive to the MRI center at least 15 minutes before the time of your examination. If You experience delays when coming to the MRI center, please phone the reception to be informed of any potential changes to your scheduled examination.

Duration of the examination

The time spent at the MRI center from arrival to departure may be up to 50-60 minutes. If You will have more than 1 body region being examined, the time will be even longer.

Sometimes examinations may be delayed due to unexpected emergencies or lengthy examinations. We will do our best to provide an uneventful examinationn in the expected time schedule providing the best quality service. Nevertheless, we would suggest that You provide enough time for your visit to the MRI center without having to unnecessarily speed up your examination.

Day of the examination

Most examinations do not require a controlled diet or other special preparation beforehand. Nevertheless there are a few examinations which may have special needs which we will inform You about in time (eg.: abdominal examinations). In the event that You didn't recieve specific instructions or guidelines at the time of your booking, than You may eat and drink as normal and take all your required medication prior to Your examination.

During the examination

After arriving to the MRI center, the following will happen:

The staff will check your personal data and the requested examination
You will be informed as to which clothing may need to be removed and will be requested to lock away your personal belongings. You are advised not to bring any valuables with you like jewelry. These items can not be taken in to the MRI scanner and will need to be removed.
If You have a hearing aid, please remove it in the changing room and inform the radiographer. The magnetic field of the MRI scanner can ruin the hearing aid.
In certain types of examinations an intravenous contrast agent has to be administered to enhance the MR scans thus providing further important information for the radiologist when reading your examination. In these cases an intravenous cannula will be temporarily placed into a vein in your arm.
It is important for You to keep still during the examination to reduce movement artefacts which may ruin the image quality. During abdominal examinations You may be requested to hold back your breath for 20-25 seconds at a time for specific measurements.
The MRI scanner is open at both ends; lighting and fresh air is provided during the examination to provide extra comfort. The radiographer can see You during the examination and if needed can talk to You. The anatomy being examined is always positioned in the center of the MR scanner.
During the examination You will hear loud knocking noise. Therefore we will provide noise protection for You.
You will have an alarm button which You can use to let us know if You have any problems, or if You would like to end your examination earlier.

After the examination

The radiographer will take You back to the changing room and You may dress up.
If You have received intravenous contrast then the iv. cannula will be removed by the radiographer who will make certain that You are feeling well.
If You took a sedative to keep You calm during the examination, then it may be advisable that You have someone to escort You back home.
Allergic reaction to MRI contrast agents are extremely rare. In the event that before leaving the MRI center You experience some kind of unusual symptoms, (eg.: rash, breathing difficulty, etc.) then please inform the staff straight away. If You experience anything unusual symptoms while on your way home or at your home, please call your local doctor or visit the nearest medical institution.

MRI Scan results

Your MR examination will be reviewed by a radiologist who will provide a full medical report within 3 days. Your report will also be available online on the EESZT (National eHealth Infrastructure) website as well as on our Patient Portal. If You provide us with an email address we will electronically send the report to You.

You will recieve the MR images on a CD after your examination. If needed, we can provide it on a USB stick.

We will not be able to discuss with You the details of the examination; this is restricted to medical doctors.
